Dr. Paula G. Ulery-Reynolds

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Paula began her dance career at age 8, after being accepted at the Uruguayan National Dance Academy, and at age 13 she became the youngest member of her country’s National Ballet. There, she performed in classic ballets such as “Les Sylphides”, “Fire Bird”, “La Boutique Fantastique” and “La Fille Mal-Gardee”, as well as in modern works by Uruguayan choreographers Elsa Vallarino and Domingo Vera. At 18, Paula moved to Paris, France to pursue undergraduate studies in Biochemistry. While in Paris, Paula continued her dance training with dancers from L’Opera de Paris and was accepted at the prestigious Mudra School of the late Maurice Bejart’s Ballet du XXeme Siecle. After completing her B.S. in France, Paula moved to Washington D.C. where she obtained a M.S in Cellular Biology, and then a Ph.D. in Neuroscience. While in D.C., Paula danced with several professional companies including D.C. Dance Theater (directed by Juan Carlos Rincones), Tony Powell Dance and Movement, and Ziva Cohen’s Spanish Dance Ensemble. In 2001 Paula moved to Dallas, to pursue her career as an academic scientist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry and conducts research on the molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia. Here in Dallas, Paula has trained with Eileen McKee and danced for several seasons with Contemporary Ballet Dallas, performing many lead roles that include “Snow Queen” in The Snow Queen, “The Sanguine” in Personnel, “The Hostess” in Feast of Friends and “Scheherazade” in Scheherazade. Paula is now delighted to have found a home in Texas Dance Theatre.
